A city rises, and burns

Every year a city is built in the desert wasteland outside of Gerlach, Nevada. For over two decades this city has increased in size every year, and after one short week major portions of it are burned to the ground and the city disperses, leaving no trace behind. This appearing and vanishing act is not done by the people who organize the city, it is done by each of the participants, by all of the participants. Burning Man is more than just a counter culture gathering, more than a rave, and more than an experiment in temporary art. It is a vision of the future, both beautiful and terrifying in it’s implications. Next year’s theme tackles this possibility head on with the theme Metropolis - the Life of Cities, but the potential has always been there. Recently the implications of Burning Man as applied to Urban Planning have been getting more notice. Enjoy the video below.
